At daylight, Tahiti, an island which must for ever remain classical to the Voyager in the South Sea, was in view – Captain Fitzroy's journal records the arrival of Charles Darwin's Beagle off the coast of Tahiti having completed the longest leg of her voyage – 3200 miles.
The picture shows that morning as the clouds dissipate and the rich vegetation starts to become visible. To the left of the painting we see a Tahiti petrel flying over the sea.
