HMS Sphinx and Dolphins captures a British frigate running free in a fair wind under full canvas, accompanied by a pod of dolphins leaping joyfully through the waves alongside.
HMS Sphinx was a 20-gun Sixth-Rate, launched from Portsmouth Dockyard in 1775. Small warships like the Sphinx were used for convoy escort, patrol duties, and as communication links.
At the time of her launch, the American War of Independence was about to begin, and Sphinx served on the American station. In November 1777 Sphinx took the privateer Eagle and then the sloop Rover a month later. In 1779, off Martinique, she was herself captured by the French 32-gun frigate L'Amphitrite. Yet this captivity was brief as she was retaken the same year and returned to British service.
