HMS Sphinx runs free at sea accompanied by a pod of dolphins. Sphinx was a British 20-gun Sixth-Rate launched in 1775; she enjoyed a career that ended in the year of Trafalgar and which included being captured by the French in 1779. Her captivity did not last long as she was re-taken later that same year. This painting is also available through Marine Artists gallery.

This painting is signed in the lower left corner and dated in the lower right.
