Highly colourful oil painting of two long-tailed ducks floating on rippling water reflecting vivid pinks, purples and golds from the sunset, sharply contrasting with the deep blue and white plumage of the birds.

A pair of long-tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis) float on the water at sunset, the surrounding ripples reflecting the vivid colours of the low sky.

Long-tailed ducks are sea ducks that winter in northern coastal waters, capable of diving to 60m underwater for molluscs and crustaceans. The male's elongated central tail feathers give the species its name. I painted this after seeing the long tailed ducks in the Coastal Creek aviary at WWT Arundel.

The painting was exhibited at the Society of Wildlife Artists' Annual Exhibition in 2025.

If this work caught your eye, a commission allows us to create something with the same spirit — a vessel, a stretch of water, a moment in maritime history that means something to you.

You don’t need to have all the details. Many commissions begin with nothing more than a name or a memory. We’ll work out the subject, the setting, and the composition together.

Standard commissions from £1,750, all-inclusive. See the full commission journey.

Leave your details and I’ll reply personally, usually within one working day.
