Godspeed is shown here moored in Ocean Village marina in the days before the start of the 2023 Ocean Globe Race, her signal flags dressed and the Stars and Stripes flying from the stern. This was painted from life, working directly on the marina-side shortly after the boat arrived in Southampton.
Godspeed is a Swan 51, and was the smallest boat in the race fleet. Her OGR campaign was organised as a challenge for US military veterans — the crew drawn from all five services (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard), many of them sailing offshore for the first time. The project was conceived as both a competitive entry and a therapeutic programme.
The panel is signed by members of the crew in the lower left — their signatures added directly onto the paint after the sketch was completed. Exhibited at the Ocean Globe Race Village, Southampton, September 2023.
