Maiden wins the OGR

Maiden is shown here crossing the finish line off Cowes in April 2024 to win the Ocean Globe Race, completing 28,500 nautical miles over 154 days at sea. This achievement made her all-female crew the first women's team to win a round-the-world yacht race — a milestone that brought Maiden full circle from Tracy Edwards' pioneering Whitbread campaign of 1989.
Originally launched in 1979 as Disque d'Or 3, the Farr-designed 58-footer was renamed Maiden when Edwards acquired her for the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race, in which the all-female crew won two legs and finished second in class. After decades of neglect, the yacht was rescued from the Seychelles in 2017 and restored by The Maiden Factor, Tracy Edwards' education charity. The 2023–24 Ocean Globe Race provided her next competitive chapter, skippered by Heather Thomas with a crew drawn from around the world.
The painting captures the final moments of the race — Maiden heeling under sail, spinnaker up, a flotilla of spectator ribs bouncing through the chop around her. I was able to paint Maiden from life several times when I exhibited at the race village and one of those paintings is now in the collection of Tracy Edwards. Signed GS in the lower left, dated lower right.
