HMS Warspite at the Battle of Narvik captures one of the most dramatic moments of the Norwegian campaign in 1940: a battleship entering the narrow, ice-choked Ofotfjord to engage German forces hidden within the fjord's depths.

HMS Warspite was one of Britain's greatest battleships and would become legendary for her combat record throughout the Second World War. At Narvik, she was the weight of the attack into a confined Norwegian fjord to destroy a German destroyer flotilla.

The painting captures the moment of approach: Warspite entering Ofotfjord with smoke billowing from her funnels, guns ready, the sky dramatic and threatening.

Her guns would silence the German flotilla, and the battle would become a significant British naval victory in an otherwise difficult campaign. Signed GS lower left, and dated 2024 lower right.
