HMS Vanguard at the 1953 Coronation Fleet Review depicts Britain's last battleship at one of the great ceremonial occasions of the 20th century: the naval pageant in the Solent celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
HMS Vanguard was the last battleship ever commissioned by the Royal Navy: built during World War II but not completed until 1946 and already approaching obsolescence as aircraft carriers superseded battleships. By 1953, Vanguard represented both the apex of battleship design and the end of an era.
The 1953 Fleet Review was the largest naval assembly since the Second World War. The painting captures the pageantry: Vanguard in the centre, her massive hull dressed overall with colourful signal flags. To the left, the royal yacht HMS Surprise carries the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II. Around them are international vessels including the famous Italian sail-training ship Amerigo Vespucci, and in the middle distance the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle.
Vanguard would be decommissioned seven years after this review, in 1960. The painting is signed GS in the lower left corner, and dated 2024 in the lower right.
