Painted on location looking towards the ferry terminal at Town Quay, Southampton. Two Red Funnel ferries sit at their berths — the distinctive red-and-white hulls catching the sunlight — while the smaller blue Hythe ferry is just visible on the left, ready to make her short crossing to Hythe Pier on the opposite shore of Southampton Water.
Town Quay has been a ferry departure point for over 150 years. Red Funnel have operated the Southampton–Cowes route since 1861, and the constant movement of ferries, tugs and yachts through this narrow stretch of water makes it a very active and varied ground for marine subjects. The painting captures a brief pause — both ferries in together, loading passengers — before the cycle of departures and arrivals resumes. Painted on panel and faintly signed GS in the lower left corner.
