HMS King George V was one of Britain's mightiest battleships, and this painting captures her at the height of her service, operating in the Mediterranean in 1943.

HMS King George V's most famous moment came in May 1941, when she participated in the dramatic hunt and destruction of the German battleship Bismarck. After Bismarck sank the British battlecruiser HMS Hood, King George V and other British capital ships pursued the German warship across the Atlantic.

The painting shows her two years later, in the Mediterranean theatre, bathed in the golden light of a Mediterranean sunset. In the distance, the hazy silhouettes of other Royal Navy vessels.

By 1943, King George V was one of the Royal Navy's most capable and resilient battleships, and she would continue in service until 1945. This painting preserves her in a moment of quiet power. Signed GS lower left, dated 2024 lower right.
