The competing yachts of the 2023 Ocean Globe Race are shown departing Ocean Village marina in Southampton, viewed from above as they file out through the harbour mouth towards the Solent and the start line. Spirit of Helsinki occupies the centre of the composition, her white hull catching the light, while Maiden enters from the right of the painting, passing the pontoons.
The vertical format was chosen to capture the full scene — from the marina pontoons and apartment blocks of Ocean Village in the foreground, through the narrow channel busy with spectator boats, to Southampton's commercial docks and the cruise ship Disney Dream berthed beyond. Amongst the spectators on the waterfront was me, painting the scene from life.
The Ocean Globe Race was organised to mark the 50th anniversary of the inaugural 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race. Entries were restricted to pre-1988 designs and modern electronics were banned. Fourteen yachts started from Southampton on 10 September 2023, bound for Cape Town as the first stop on their circumnavigation.
