Translated 9 and Maiden are shown racing for the lead just after the start of the 2023 Ocean Globe Race in the Solent. Their spinnakers dominate the composition — Translated 9's bold stripes on the left, Maiden's billowing sail on the right — whilst the rest of the fleet and a crowd of spectator boats, including the preserved steamship Shieldhall, fill the background.

Translated 9 (formerly L'Esprit d'Équipe, winner of the 1985–86 Whitbread) is a Philippe Briand-designed 65-footer entered by the Italian technology company Translated. Maiden, the Bruce Farr-designed 58-footer made famous by Tracy Edwards in the 1989 Whitbread, was competing with an all-female crew who would go on to win the race outright seven months later. Together the two yachts represent the deep historical connections the Ocean Globe Race was designed to celebrate.

The painting captures the action and spectacle of a major race start — acres of colourful sail, the tension of close-quarters racing, and dozens of boats jostling for position in the confined waters of the Solent. Exhibited at the Southampton International Boat Show, 2024.
