Spotted Eagle Rays

A school of spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) are shown during migration, their broad dark wings covered in the intricate white spot patterns that make them one of the most visually striking fish in the ocean. The composition fills the square format with overlapping forms — rays at different depths and angles creating a rhythmic pattern across the surface.

The painting is rendered in a restricted blue monochrome palette, letting the focus fall entirely on the extraordinary patterning of the rays themselves — each animal's spot arrangement as individual as a fingerprint.

Spotted eagle rays are found in warm coastal waters worldwide, often travelling in large groups during seasonal migrations. They can reach wingspans of over three metres, and moving with a graceful, undulating flight through the water. This painting is signed GS in the lower right.
