The Sea Shepherd conservation vessel Allankay is shown patrolling Antarctic waters, positioned between a pod of humpback whales and a distant fishing vessel. The whales dominate the foreground — one breaching, another's tail rising from the swell — while Allankay holds station in the middle distance against a dramatic, ice-capped shoreline.
Sea Shepherd's Antarctic campaigns involve direct intervention to protect marine wildlife, placing their ships between target species and vessels suspected of illegal or unregulated fishing. Allankay operates in some of the most remote and hostile waters on earth, and the painting attempts to convey both the scale of the Southern Ocean swell and the proximity of these encounters — conservation work carried out at close quarters in dangerous conditions.
The composition is deliberately divided into three layers: the whales in the immediate foreground, Allankay in the middle ground, and the fishing boat in the background beyond. Painted on panel to allow fine detail across the scene. Signed GS in the lower right, and dated in the lower left.
